Improvised combustion heaters can create fire and carbon monoxide hazards, especially when used indoors without proper ventilation and manufacturer approval.
Preparedness begins with insulation, layers, bedding, and a safe backup-heat plan. Those measures may sound less dramatic than a do-it-yourself heater, but they can make a major difference without adding a new source of danger.
Create a Warm Zone
Choose one room where household members can spend most of their time. A smaller interior room is often easier to keep warm than a large open living area. Close doors to unused rooms. Close curtains or blinds at night and use draft blockers at exterior doors.
